When this book was introduced to me, by a fellow video maker, i was told that it’s a great first book to read about how to tell stories. Now having finished the book, I’m not really sure what to think. Now if you can follow me, making videos has and is an art. I’ve seen movies about how people go to art shows and questions how certain objects or a painting of a door can be considered art. Some people can see it, but others don’t. I still don’t know if what I read in this book was common knowledge and I already understand it, and I understand the art! Or if I’m one of those people that is degrading and cheapening the very playing field by even creating videos with my laptop.

Now don’t get me wrong, I think this book was a great read, an i think Part 1 was very helpful. I bookmarked a few pages. Part Two (the last 75 pages) was helpful as well, and interesting to see the progression of old school to digital. It gave me a sense of revrance for what I was dealing with or getting into.

Having reread the first 5 chapters of the book about three times before finishing it over a 2 and a half year timespan I was thinking that there was going to be a lot more action packed information in the book. Only to find out after the 6th or 7th chapter it goes on to talk about positives and negatives of the progression of film.

I did find the eye blinking thing quite fascinating. and maybe someday i’ll get to test out the theory. But until then i’m going to go read a documentary story telling book and see if that gets me on the right road on how to tell someone’s story.
